Shared homeownership

This page provides information about a proposal for a scheme that would allow for sharing of the ownership of a home between a homeowner and and a community housing provider. It contains documents explaining how this sort of scheme could work, and also practical information and tools for both providers and potentially-interested homeowners to decide whether the arrangement would be good for them. The scheme is being developed by an informal working group of interested organizations (the Shared Homeownership Working Group), which is co-convened by Regional Development Australia Sydney and the Federation.

Shared-equity home-ownership: recommendations for a business case. FAQs for financial institutions. This document contains information, in an easy question-and-answer format, for financial institutions who might be interested in giving a home loan to a consumer (homeowner) who is participating in a shared homeownership scheme along the lines proposed in the Doors to ownership model.

FAQs for interested homebuyers. This document contains information, in an easy question-and-answer format, for homebuyers who might be interested in a shared homeownership arrangement with a community housing provider along the lines proposed in the Doors to ownership model.

Shared home ownership deed and commentary. This document is a proforma document that sets out the agreements between a prospective homeowner and a community housing provider, on their respective rights and responsibilities under a shared homeownership arrangement. In practice a community housing provider establishing a shared homeownership product is likely to want to get its own legal advice, and a prospective homeowner should get independent financial and legal advice before signing up. What this document does is give an idea of what an agreement, that is fair to both parties, could look like, under the Doors to ownership model for shared homeownership.
