Good Practice Unit

The Good Practice Unit of the NSWFHA is currently a team of five who provide a range of training, consultancy and resource services for the community housing sector and the wider social housing sector. 

Laurel Draffen

Laurel has extensive experience in managing community based education and training throughout  her career. As Manager of the Good Practice Unit at the Federation of Housing Associations for the past six years she has provided leadership in the provision of learning and development opportunities responsive to the needs of the community housing industry.  This has included provision of VET qualifications within the AQTF framework, and contract and consultancy services for a range of professional and organizational development needs. Additional contracts Laurel has recently managed from inception to implementation  include a five year contract with Housing NSW, in partnership with Swinburne University of Technology and  training for staff at the ACT Department of Community Services and Health.  Her team was recognised by industry peers in 2008 by winning the NSW Award for Excellence in Professional Development from the Australasian Housing Institute. In partnership with Western Sydney Institute of TAFE, Laurel was also successful in obtaining funding for a national project for the integration of e-learning into the community housing industry. With a strong background in teaching and training Laurel is committed to working in the community sector for the development of lifelong learning opportunities.

Laurel has a Bachelor of Arts, Diploma in Education, Masters in Education as well as Certificate IV in Assessment and Workplace Training. She is a qualified internet webmaster and has a RSA/Cambridge Certificate in Teaching English as a Foreign Language. She is a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and is member of the Australasian Housing Institute. Laurel is currently completing a Masters of Business Administration at the University of NSW.

 

Adam West

Adam provides consultancy services, training and assessment and responds to Hotline enquires.
Adam works intensively with organisations to assist address performance improvements, particularly in response to registration. He has been instrumental in writing training in understanding registration and developing asset management plans and risk management plans with the housing association sector.  He has facilitated the developmentof a community hosuing tenant network.

Adam is an experienced trainer with a highly participative style.  He has developed and delivered a number of units of competency in the Certificate IV in Social Housing. His particular specialisations are in community development – community renewal and tenant participation, OH&S, policy development and asset management.

Adam has worked with the Federation since 2004 and brings extensive UK experience. Adam has worked as a tenant participation officer for a medium sized housing association in the UK.  He spent five years working for Priority Estates Project; one of the UK's leading not for profit housing management and training consultancies.  He has a postgraduate Diploma in Housing Policy and Practice, a Certificate IV in Training and Workplace Assessment and is a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.   

Ruth Djordjevic

Ruth is an experienced trainer particularly in online development and delivery. She has developed and delivered many units of competency in a wide variety of online educational contexts. 

Ruth’s experience as a trainer has been to a wide variety of industries including science, dispute resolution, ethics, legal, business and the public sector.

Ruth has a Bachelor of Education and a Bachelor of Legal Studies, Master of Education and a Master of Law as well as Certificate IV and Diploma in Assessment and Workplace Training. She is a qualified mediator and has a Graduate Certificate in Facilitating and Managing eLearning.

Ruth’s main role as Training Delivery Coordinator is to coordinate the delivery of training services including face to face, flexible and online training environments.

Please contact Estelle if you have any enquiries regarding our internal Certificate IV delivery program, or have any enquiries about training materials or your progress in a course. Estelle handles and maintains all record keeping for accredited training and assessment .

Estelle has worked in community organisations in both an administrative and direct client provision capacity for 16 years and has been with the Federation since 1996.  Prior to working at the Federation Estelle was involved with tenant support at an organisation that assisted people with disabilities live in the community, and worked in an administrative capacity at the NSW Council of Social Service (NCOSS) as well as other organisations. 

 

Lyndall Katz

Lyndall provides training, assessment and consultancy services and responds to Hotline enquires.
Lyndall has worked with a number of organisations to develop customised training in housing management for staff. She delivers training across all the units of the Certificate IV in Social Housing. She also provides training in the Diploma of Social Housing through eLearning. She has facilitated governance planning workshops and provided governance training and reviews.  Lyndall is a dynamic and interactive trainer and brings a strong social justice and community perspective to her work.

Lyndall joined the federation in 1999.  Previously she worked in a NSW housing association for over 10 years. 

Lyndall holds a BA and a Certificate IV in Assessment and Workplace Training and a Diploma in Social Housing.  She uses her training and facilitation skills across a diversity of groups and situations.

 

Rita McKenzie

Rita worked in public and Aboriginal housing for quite a number of years (1996 - 2007); Housing NSW within the role of Community Development Coordinator, Aboriginal Housing.    NSW Aboriginal Housing Office, Rita also held a few difference positions at AHO (training & support unit,  support and administration for the AHO Board,  Executive & Client Services, Aboriginal Housing and Information Services Unit providing information and resources to Aboriginal tenants and applicants, assisting with decisions making regarding AHO properties managed by Housing NSW.   Prior to that she worked for a community resource centre in the Penrith and  provided the training and resources and support to a number of community development projects and Aboriginal and mainstream community services located throughout Western Sydney and Blue Mountain.

Her experiences have provided Rita with a broad knowledge and understanding of the community and Aboriginal housing sector.    She holds a Certificate IV in Assessment and Workplace Training and Certificate IV in Social Housing.  She uses her training and facilitation skills across a diversity of groups and situations, also providing Aboriginal cultural awareness training to community housing staff.   Rita’s Aboriginal heritage   is from both sides of Australia, member of the Noongar people (Wudjari, Njunga, Nyungar, Nyoongar) of the south western corner of Western Australia, and a member of the Kamilaroi (Gamilaroi) people from NSW.

 

Nada Goodacre

Nada has over 13 years experience in developing and delivering training, project management and consultation to a variety of community and  private organisations as well as working with government agencies .

Nada’s training experience is diverse as she has specialised in training across three main industries. They are  the “Job Network Services, Human Resources and the Hospitality & Tourism sectors”.

Over the last 5 years Nada has worked as a National Job Search Trainer & Training and Development consultant for one of Australia’s largest  Job Network providers. Here she has designed  and delivered operational, company induction and policy training to all it’s managers and frontline staff across Australia and England.

Nada has developed and managed a variety of training projects, conferences and training events within her training contracts. She has also developed many training programs, resources and  manuals for compliance training.

Nada holds a Diploma and Cert IV in Training and Workplace Assessment Systems and has delivered accredited training as part of the Certificate IV in Employment Services Frontline Management, Cert IV in Training & Assessment Systems as well as the Cert IV in Food & Beverage training at TAFE.

Nada’s main role as a Project Officer for the Federation is to provide registration information sharing workshops and training support and resources for the Community Housing sector to meet with the new Regulatory Code Guidelines for 2009.
